18th June, India:

Cricket’s return to the HPCA Stadium, Dharamshala, first through IPL 2026 and most recently the India-Afghanistan ODI on June 13, has once again turned match week into an economic event for Himachal Pradesh. Beyond the cricket itself, the venue’s calendar has become one of the most reliable triggers for tourism, hospitality demand, and short-term employment in the region.

Dharamshala hotels witnessed a 600% IPL-driven surge in the days leading up to the matches, a spike that extended into taxi demand, restaurant footfall, and homestay and hotel bookings across the town. For a hill destination that typically competes with Manali and Shimla for tourist attention, a single cricket fixture now does the work of an entire marketing season, pulling in visitors who stay, spend, and explore beyond the stadium gates.

That surge in footfall translates directly into state economic development. Match weeks create both direct employment in ground staff, hospitality teams, event personnel and security, and a wider ripple of indirect livelihoods across hotels, transport operators, vendors and tourism operators. While seasonal, the impact is significant. Small businesses around Dharamshala plan their year in part around the HPCA match calendar, and adventure tourism operators report a noticeable uptick in bookings whenever international fixtures are confirmed.

“Every major match at this stadium becomes more than a sporting fixture. It becomes an economic moment for the entire region,” said Anurag Singh Thakur, former President of HPCA and Member of Parliament. “The vision behind the HPCA Stadium was not just to bring international cricket to Himachal Pradesh, but to create opportunities for local communities. Today, every major match boosts tourism, supports local businesses, and generates livelihoods for hotels, homestays, transport operators, and countless others across the region.” he added.

As Dharamshala continues to host IPL fixtures, international matches and ICC tournaments, HPCA’s role has extended beyond cricket administration into being a genuine driver of Himachal Pradesh’s tourism and livelihood economy, a model increasingly relevant for other emerging cricket destinations across India.
